Interpretation News
Last month the UK hosted the third Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM3) at Lancaster House in London. The event was attended by 27 world leaders and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon joined ministers via telephone to describe the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All initiative.
Ubiqus provided interpretation and audio-visual services for the whole event. The rig included a 7 channel Integrus simultaneous interpretation system, a range of conference microphones, dome camera system with relays to external plasma screens, and full AV facilities in plenary and breakout sessions including a live two-way link with the UN in New York.
Ubiqus once again proved itself a market leader in this field, as reflected by our client’s feedback:
“Thank you again for all the help that you and the team gave us for the Clean Energy Ministerial. Your adaptability and can-do attitude was very welcome at an event where I appreciate the demands were ever-changing and growing. You did a thoroughly professional job and it was clear that you are real experts in your field!”

Translation: safe partner and best practice
|
|
| |
Is your translation partner safe?
A recent analysis of language service companies in the UK revealed that many translation agencies are struggling to survive in the current market. Around 20% were awarded a ‘danger’ rating and a further 20% were identified as vulnerable to hostile takeover.

Case Study
We recently worked with a major telecommunications company to translate 50,000 words of their new website from English into Dutch, German, French and Mexican Spanish. We took the following steps to ensure we returned high quality content in time for the website’s global launch at the beginning of May 2012:
QUALITY: Translators were carefully picked to meet the client’s requirements, and their technical ability was tested and approved by the client. The content was split into ‘technical’ and ‘non-technical’, to ensure translators were matched appropriately.
PLANNING: A core team of 2-3 translators per language were booked in advance to ensure a high level of accuracy and consistency.
COMMUNICATION: Close client communication at all times ensured that the most complex and critical translation batches were prioritised and delivered to deadline.

Do you need every word, er, word for word?
|
|
| |
Scenario: you need a record of your high profile event and all delegates’ views must be captured in their own words.
What can transcription companies offer? A verbatim transcript.
What can Ubiqus offer? A verbatim transcript; a full transcript or a revised report.
In laymen’s terms, we can make subtle and aesthetic changes to a transcript to create a professional, stylistic document without altering any meaning or content.
A verbatim transcript is generally only required in a legal setting. Quoting a speaker word for word, with false starts, repetition, incorrect grammar and punctuation can make a very untidy document.
In a full transcript, we clean up spoken language to ensure clarity on the page and works into an attractive template to enhance readability.
A revised report is suited to events when it is the content, as opposed to the manner of expression, that is of interest - it brings the meaning to the fore rather than the expression.
So, is verbatim really necessary?
We do not expect our clients to make this decision. Ubiqus is a specialised document services company and by determining the audience and purpose of your event, our experts can provide the most suitable solution for your needs.
Afterthought – if you want a user-friendly, snappy record to disseminate to a wider audience or publish on web, why not combine the longer report with one of our summaries.
