Do you have experience of my sector?

Ubiqus’s specialist division, Westminster Sonus, has more than three decades of experience across all these sectors: European Works Councils, event organisers, corporate, HR, government and the public sector, legal, and AV companies. The chances are very good that we have interpreters with experience in your sector – just ask.

But really, our easy adaptation to different sectors and sub-sectors is just as important as our sector list. Our interpreters are experienced specialists; we assign them to jobs based on their proven performance.

What’s the difference between translation and interpreting?

Translation is written. Interpreting is spoken. They’re very different skills: we offer both.

How do you differ from other, less expensive translation and interpreting companies?

Ubiqus provides a comprehensive, specialised service. We don’t just book interpreters, we:

  • Draw on 30 years of experience, ISO 9001:2000 qualification and robust company processes
  • Ensure that the interpreters chosen for your job have proven experience at meetings in your sector

  • Supply our own Bosch interpreting booths and equipment, so the equipment is guaranteed to be in good condition and fit for purpose.
Very few interpreting companies can provide the same range of services as Ubiqus. Even fewer can offer as deep a level of understanding. We invest wholeheartedly in your requirements. That means we take care to research, empathise and understand your organisation and your objectives for every meeting or event. It means that when your speakers discuss processes, our interpreters understand what they mean. Ultimately it means that the interpreters and interpreting equipment will deliver the service you need on the day. It will be accurate and it will be professional.

What languages do your interpreters work in?

We offer interpretation in about 70 languages. There are said to be roughly 200 languages with more than a million native speakers. So why don’t we claim to offer interpreting in 100, or 150, or 200 languages? Because our focus is on high quality, experienced and specialist interpreters.

Many of those 200 languages are used as everyday spoken languages – but often their speakers use a second language for education and official business. Sometimes the languages are spoken by communities where high academic qualification is rare.

Therefore, it simply isn’t realistic to claim that we can offer a large, academically qualified, trained and experienced base of conference, meeting and court interpreters in – for example – Afar, or Aramaic, or Guarani, or Nahuatl. So we don’t make a claim we can’t sustain.

How many languages can you accommodate at a meeting?

Our simultaneous interpreting equipment accommodates up to 32 languages at a single conference. (So conferences of half a dozen languages are a breeze.)

How do you service events and conferences around the world?

We are part of the international Bosch Congress Rental Network (CRN) – the only UK company selected for this exclusive network. Our CRN partners are located around the world; you will still receive the same service from your UK-based account manager, while local technicians and equipment from our partners help manage transport costs. Of course, when you want us to personally service your events overseas, we can do that too.

Do you own the interpreting equipment you hire to clients?

Yes we do! Some interpreting agencies hire equipment from a third party. But that has never been our model. Our Bosch interpreting booths, microphones and headsets are maintained in mint condition by our experienced technicians. Our account managers can advise you on the precise setup that will bring the best results for your meeting; our expert technicians set up, run and take down the equipment – for an onsite experience that is remarkably stress-free.

We operate a transparent pricing structure. Work is priced by the number of languages, the length of your meeting and the language interpreting technique you need. What’s the difference between simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting?

Simultaneous interpreting is used for multi-lingual meetings. As the name suggests, simultaneous interpreters render proceedings from one language to another in real time. For each language, a pair of interpreters work together in a glass audio booth, listening to the conversation on headphones and simultaneously speaking into a microphone. Delegates listen on earpieces, tuned to the channel that carries their language.

Consecutive interpreting is usually used when there are only two languages at the meeting (generally English and one other). Consecutive interpreters wait for the speaker to finish a sentence or a section before interpreting for listeners.

We need simultaneous interpretation at a conference. Why do we need two interpreters in each language?

Because simultaneous interpreting requires such intense concentration, interpreters work in teams of two. Each interpreter translates for no more than 30 to 45 minutes at a stretch. Force an interpreter to go on much longer, and you won’t just have a tired interpreter – you (and your delegates) will also have a deteriorating translation.

Obviously, having two interpreters in each language costs more than having one. Occasionally cost-conscious clients ask whether a single interpreter could handle the conference. We are quite firm on this point: we won’t compromise the quality of our interpreting - and the credibility of your meeting - by skimping on service.
